Influence of Leguminous Cover Crops on Soil Chemical and Biological Properties in a No-Till Tropical Fruit Orchard

چکیده

South Florida’s agricultural soils are traditionally low in organic matter (OM) and high carbonate rock fragments. These calcareous inherently nutrient-poor require management for successful crop production. Sunn hemp (SH, Crotalaria juncea) velvet bean (VB, Mucuna pruriens) highly productive leguminous cover crops (CCs) that have shown potential to add large quantities of dry biomass nutrient- organic-matter-limited systems. This study focuses on intercropping these two CCs with young carambola (Averrhoa carambola) trees. The objective was test the effectiveness green manure providing nutrients supplementing traditional fertilizer regimes a sustainable soil-building option. Typically, poultry (PM) is standard used or production area. As such, PM treatments fallow were included comparison. control (F), (FM), sunn (SH), SH (SHM), (VB), VB (VBM). grown summer growing seasons. At end each 90-day period, terminated left soil surface decompose no-till fashion. results suggest produced greatest amount material ranging from 48 71% higher than over result, also accumulated significantly amounts total carbon (TC) nitrogen (TN) within their added soil. hemp, SHM, FM showed accumulation OM, TC, TN. Soil inorganic N (NH?? + NO3? NO2) fluctuated throughout experiment. Our indicate generally, VB-treated had highest available around 2 months post termination, while SH-treated exhibited values at CC termination time. Interactions among leguminous trees, crops and weeds in a no-till alley cropping system

Trees improve the soil quality and their rapid growth in the tropics make agroforestry systems potentially effective for establishing low-input agricultural systems in this region. This study assessed the effects of the biophysical interactions among leguminous trees, weeds, cotton and maize in an alley cropping system. The experiment comprised six treatments: Clitoria + Gliricidia; Acacia ...

Long-term use of cover crops and no-till shift soil microbial community life strategies in agricultural soil

Reducing tillage and growing cover crops, widely recommended practices for boosting soil health, have major impacts on soil communities. Surprisingly little is known about their impacts on soil microbial functional diversity, and especially so in irrigated Mediterranean ecosystems. In long-term experimental plots at the West Side Research and Extension Center in California's Central Valley, we ...

Crop management effect on chemical and biological properties of soil

This study was aimed at evaluating the effect of crop rotation and various tillage systems onthe chemical and biological properties of soil in the years 2013-2015. The first order factorincluded cropping systems: a) crop rotation (pea – winter wheat – spring wheat) and b)monoculture of winter wheat, whereas the second order factor were tillage systems:1) conventional (CT), 2) reduced (RT) and 3...
